Los Angeles Unified School District, one of the largest school districts in the country, has more than 400,000 students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

Last month, on September 6th, this district became the latest to be hit by a ransom malware attack. In a statement published online, the district's administrators said it had detected unusual activity within its networks, noting that it had been hit with ransomware. However, despite the attack, school activities were not disrupted for students.

Officials responded with a large response, with the FBI and Department of Homeland Security assisting local law enforcement. According to local reports, students and staff have lost access to their email accounts.

Although reports are not yet complete, we cannot say whether attackers accessed students' information, including their assessment and disciplinary records.

The official statement states, "The District has staggered password reset access to minimize congestion from simultaneous users accessing the website."

In the wake of the attack, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and other partners published a warning about Vice Society, saying it has been "disproportionately targeting the education sector."

The attack on the Los Angeles school is the latest against educational institutions. In a report by security firm Sophos, based on a survey of 499 respondents, 56 percent of lower education organizations and 64 percent of higher education organizations were hit by ransomware last year, an increase of considerably.
