To ensure the resilience and security of global telecoms supply chains and future 6G networks, Australia, Canada, and the US have backed the UK's plans.

These nations were formerly in the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, formed during World War II, and include four English-speaking countries (Britain, the United States, Canada, and Australia).

All three countries have agreed to support the UK's plans to develop Open RAN, which seeks to promote a new breed of telecom equipment. This partnership will allow providers to 'mix and match different solutions from different companies, which is not currently possible with networks.

As a result of the agreement between the nations, it is hoped to reduce the reliance on a few telcos for building and maintaining 5G and future networks such as 6G while opening the market to new players.

The Digital Infrastructure Minister, Julia Lopez, added. "The UK has set a blueprint for telecoms firms worldwide to design more open and secure networks."

The DCMS revealed in the statement that the UK would invest £250 million ($306m) to be ahead of everyone else in terms of 5G innovation.

Earlier this year, Lopez talked about future mobile networks and their key components during the Open RAN World conference in Berlin. Some of these principles include:

  • Open disaggregation allows RAN elements to be sourced from different suppliers.
  • Standards-based compliance allows all suppliers to test solutions against standards in an open, neutral environment.
  • Demonstrated interoperability, ensuring disaggregated elements work together as a fully functional system.
  • Implementation neutrality allows suppliers to innovate and differentiate the features and performance of their products.
