EU launches new satellite communications system

The European Union is developing a new space-based secure satellite communication system. It will use quantum technology for encryption.

Secure and reliable

The European Commission's goal is to guarantee that satellite communications services are secure, reliable and affordable. They must be available worldwide in the long term without interruptions. The satellite-based connectivity system is necessary for critical infrastructure protection, surveillance, and crisis management. The system will support applications that are important to the economy, security, and defense of the member states.

The estimated total cost is six billion euros. From 2022 to 2027, the EU will contribute €2.4 billion. The European Space Agency (ESA), member states and the private companies will also contribute to the amount.

Managing space traffic

The EU is also introducing a new approach to managing space traffic. There is a huge increase in the number of satellites in space, which has prompted the European Commission to issue a warning about the danger of collisions. There is an increased risk of accidents in space with more satellites in orbit. The EU will develop technologies to better identify and track satellites. Legislation will also be tightened.
