The Tesla and SpaceX CEO made his plea to independent voters during a Tuesday interview with the National Press Club in Washington, DC. During the talk, Musk explained that he's urging independents to vote Republican in the upcoming midterm elections to help ensure that the government functions correctly.

He added that doing otherwise would be fine but that without a Republican majority in Congress, it would become more difficult to pass legislation in the future.

I don't think one party has a monopoly on good ideas, said Mr. Musk, noting that both parties have good and bad ideas. For example, last year, the GOP-controlled House repealed the federal tax credit for electric vehicles but reinstated it after pressure this summer.

In a tweet on Monday, Musk wrote… "Shared power curbs the worst excesses of both parties, therefore I recommend voting for a Republican Congress, given that the Presidency is Democratic."

The billionaire added in a follow-up tweet: "Hardcore Democrats or Republicans never vote for the other side, so independent voters are the ones who decide who's in charge!"

As Musk tweeted in April, maintaining public trust requires the platform to be politically neutral. On Twitter recently, Musk responded favorably to prominent conservative media figures, including progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.

Because a Democrat is the president, laws related to technological platforms are unlikely to go through, given the makeup of Congress.

The Republican Party has worked with Democrats to rein in the power of tech firms through new competition laws. However, others remain skeptical and focus on content moderation and alleged censorship of conservative viewpoints.

Moreover, the Democratic approach to content moderation differs greatly from the Republican one, making it more difficult for Congress to pass laws on that topic.

At a political retreat in August, the founder of Tesla gave over $100,000 to Republican-funded groups, and he donated more during the 2018 midterm election, according to Federal Election Commission records.

Additionally, the Tesla CEO has had a falling out with the Biden White House as the president tries to encourage automotive companies to be more environmentally friendly. Musk claimed in an email exchange with CNBC in February, that President Biden is ignoring his electric vehicle company to focus on legacy automakers.

Since Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion last month, his tweets have come under intense scrutiny. His leadership has been marked by massive layoffs, paused advertising spending, and confusion over its policies.
