Philippines Data Center Project Has $125 Million Investment

A new data center in the greater Manila area will pull 30MW, according to its developer, Megawide. The project will require an initial investment of about $125 million, the company has said. Its location in Cavite Province places it immediately south of Metro Manila in a rapidly growing area.

According to IDCA Research, the Philippines lags badly in server density within Southeast Asia. Its servers command only 0.1% of the country's electricity grid, compared to an average of 0.7% for its fellow Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) neighbors Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. About 60% of this nation of 110 million people has Internet access, with high-speed access still less than 5%.

The Philippines government estimates an investment of about $300 million annually over the next few years. The new Megawide project would represent a substantial portion of that amount, even as the country could benefit from a higher overall level of investment as well.
