Tesla's Megapack Powers New Battery Storage System in Europe

Megapack battery storage to Arevon for California projects

Tesla's energy storage system has been installed at utility EDF's Miramas solar-thermal power plant in France. With 196 MWh of capacity, this installation was Europe's largest battery storage system until EDF announced an even larger installation the following week.

Its purpose is to help offset fluctuations in solar production and reduce reliance on fossil fuels like oil or coal. It will contribute to the European Union's goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions from power production by 40% by 2030.

North Yorkshire's Harmony Energy developed this installation, powered by Tesla Megapacks, though the American electric car maker managed the entire construction. This facility can store up to 196MWh of energy for two hours and supply power to around 300,000 homes.

Mr. Peter Kavanagh, Director of Harmony Energy, said. "Battery energy storage systems are essential to unlocking the full potential of renewable energy in the UK, and we hope this particular one highlights Yorkshire as a leader in green energy solutions,"

He added, "These projects are not supported by taxpayer subsidy and will play a major role in contributing to the Net Zero transition, as well as ensuring the future security of the UK's energy supply and reduced reliance on foreign gas imports."

It was energized early this year in anticipation of a possible lack of energy during the winter months. There were originally scheduled to be two phases in the system's launch, one in December 2022 and a second in March 2023; the deadline was accelerated to allow both phases to go live this month.

Harmony remarked in the press release that the facility's early opening could contribute to "support National Grid in its efforts to provide stable and secure power to UK households over the challenging winter period."

Tesla's AI software, Autobidder, will help the facility adjust energy supply to demand more easily. Elon Musk has praised the facility, adding that "Tesla Megapacks are highly effective in addressing electricity demand spikes that cause power outages."

During the past year, the United Kingdom has been facing an energy crisis due to increased power demand after economies reopened post-Covid. In Europe, the Russian war with Ukraine also affected gas supplies.
