Digital Realty's Lamda Helix, a leading data center provider in the EMEA region, is pleased to announce the opening of its fourth data center in Athens, Greece.

Located in the east of the city and offering 24/7 security and access to a range of services, this latest addition to the Lamda Hellix portfolio provides further evidence of the company's commitment to serving customers across Europe.

Currently, there are two carrier-neutral data centers on the company's campus in the Greek capital, with a combined capacity of 22 MW. Two more are in development.

The company's third facility, ATH3, will be operational by March 2023. The company broke ground on ATH3 in October 2021 and previously indicated it would be live by December 2022.

“Digital Realty is pleased to expand its presence in Greece, with ATH3 and ATH4 playing an important role in meeting the increasing demand for carrier-neutral data center capacity in this market. It’s an important part of Digital Realty’s integrated Mediterranean strategy, which will enable customers to build new network routes with lower latencies to Eastern Europe and Northern Africa,” Bill Stein, CEO of Digital Realty, commented.

Once finished, the company said that the data center should be the largest one in the country, having 6.8MW of capacity in an 8,600 sqm (92,500 sq ft) facility.

This new campus building, ATH4, is projected to provide 6.8 MW when completed and is scheduled for completion sometime in 2024. The new building is expected to have electricity from Lamda Hellix's existing ATH1 and ATH2 buildings.

The new facility will feature a range of cutting-edge technologies, including high-performance computing and storage infrastructure, full redundancy, and an uninterruptible power supply (UPS).

It will also offer connectivity solutions, including dark fiber links and direct connections to major global carriers. Lamda Hellix's 24/7 expert technical support and assistance will also benefit customers.

The company was founded in 2002, originally as a cable landing station. Its first data center, Athens-1, opened in 2003 and has earned the LEED Gold certification. A year after the Greek debt crisis ended, Athens-2 was opened.

In 2020, the company was acquired by Digital Realty, but earlier this year, it announced plans to build a new 6.5MW data center on the Greek island of Crete.
