Microsoft Is Planning to Build Two More Data Centers in Leesburg, VA
Microsoft recently announced its plans to expand its data center capabilities by adding two more centers in Leesburg, Virginia. This move solidifies Microsoft’s cloud technology and data center management leadership position.
The new facilities will join the existing six data centers Microsoft already has in place in Virginia. It also continues Microsoft’s investment in the state, as the company has been expanding its data center footprint since 2013. The new data centers are expected to bring 200 full-time jobs to the region. The project has been confirmed by Loudoun Economic Development executive director Buddy Rizer.
Microsoft's data centers will take up around 475,700 sq. ft (44,200 sq. m) and sit on the roughly 323 acres of property the company acquired from the Peterson Cos. in 2018. In addition to being close to Leesburg Executive Airport, this site is adjacent to two existing Microsoft facilities - IAD01-1 and IAD01-2 - which reportedly occupy 245,000 sq ft (22,750 sqm).
The developer of a Redmond based-project says that BJ approved the fast-track development application in 2020. “With approval secured, the Microsoft team and its team members can progress with a vertical construction.” Said Randall Drake.
Across Loudoun, Microsoft is planning a $400 million data center campus in Arcola Business Park, which covers 67 acres. With the $93.7 million purchase of the land in Aug 2020, the company acquired the Arcola/Stone Ridge area in August 2020. It will be named IAD11 and span 500,000 square feet (46,450 square meters).
The expansion of Microsoft’s data centers in Virginia is part of the company’s goal to continue investing in the cloud and provide reliable access to digital infrastructure for customers worldwide. Furthermore, these additional capacities will help meet customer demand as more businesses migrate to the cloud and move their operations online.
Microsoft’s commitment to the state of Virginia is also a testament to its dedication to sustainability. The company aims to make all of its data centers carbon-neutral by 2030, and these new centers will be powered with renewable energy sources like solar and wind power.
