NVIDIA released a statement regarding the new prohibition of exporting AI chips to Russia and China.

The chipmaker says the United States government has notified it of a new license requirement that will affect the A100 and H100, the two GPUs designed to accelerate machine learning tasks.

"The license requirement also includes any future NVIDIA integrated circuit achieving both peak performance and chip-to-chip I/O performance equal to or greater than thresholds that are roughly equivalent to the A100, as well as any system that includes those circuits," NVIDIA commented.

It has been reported that the United States government has informed NVIDIA that the new regulations address the potential for their products to be used for military purposes.

The United States Department of Commerce spokesperson said. "While we are not in a position to outline specific policy changes at this time, we are taking a comprehensive approach to implementing additional actions necessary related to technologies, end-uses, and end-users to protect US national security and foreign policy interests,"

Chinese officials have set a new series of tariffs on several types of NVIDIA products, affecting the company's quarterly sales by up to $400 million. AMD has also been warned that the new tariffs will impact its MI200 product.

Currently, NVIDIA shares are down 11.45% from the open, while AMD shares are down 6.81%. On the other hand, it's worth noting that the wider stock market had another red day.
