The Foundation of Every Project Is a 'Responsible AI,' Said 93% of Appen Participants.

Appen, a global leader in providing high-quality training data for machine learning and artificial intelligence, released findings from its latest Responsible AI Report. This study was conducted in eight countries with more than 500 participants worldwide (primarily senior IT and business leaders). 93% of participants said responsible AI was the foundation of all projects.

The report surveyed 1,000 individuals who work with AI daily, finding that over 93% believe responsible AI practices are essential to the success of any project.

"This year's State of AI report finds that 93 percent of respondents believe responsible AI is the foundation of all AI projects; the problem is, many are facing the challenges of trying to build great AI with poor datasets, and it's creating a significant roadblock to reaching their goals," said Mark Brayan, CEO at Appen.

During the survey 51% of respondents agreed that accuracy has been the key in most Artificial Intelligence, while 42% report that AI lifecycle data sourcing stage as demanding.

"The majority of AI efforts are spent managing data for the AI lifecycle, which means it is an incredible undertaking for AI leads to handle alone – and is the area many are struggling with,"

"Sourcing high-quality data is critical to the success of AI solutions, and we are seeing organizations emphasize the importance of data accuracy," said Sujatha Sagiraju, Chief Product Officer at Appen.

Most (95%) respondents agreed that synthetic data is crucial to creating comprehensive datasets. Some organizations report that their models need to be retrained regularly. For example, 85% of respondents said they had to retrain their models at least four times a year.

Lastly, the company is unsure of its place in AI adoption relative to other business leaders in the industry. 49% believe they are in the lead, while 49% say they are even with their competitors.

"Our clients tell us AI is integral to their digital transformation programs. AI initiatives within the UK and Europe have been established to fast track and improve business processes and help deliver sustainable growth in today's tough economic climate. They tell us that, though AI strategies are displacing and disrupting elements of traditional business models, the technology is being introduced to bring about business benefits, cost savings, resilience as well as innovative strategies for growth." Said Sarah Lowe, VP of Business Development in EMEA and APAC

This survey of the AI landscape was conducted through an online survey of Harris Poll, interviewing 504 business leaders, managers and IT decision makers, in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and Ireland.
